Has to be Smoke-free

Daryl, my next oldest brother, has informed me it is my turn to quit smoking. eL (my older sis)has been a non-smoker for three months. Daryl--3 weeks. Right now I think I last ~3hrs.

My motivation should be greater but as a graduate student in life sciences, very little of my time is spent being physically active. More or less my recreation in the Mid-West resorts to having a couple drinks with friends. Could be beer, could be coffee, but either way, it generally ends up in sparking a cancer stick. Ahhhh... I actually do enjoy smoking. The flavor, the smell on certain occasions, and certainly the sensation as it enters and leaves the lungs. I think it would be asinine for me not to admit that I am very much addicted at this point, but I just wanted to also note that people really can enjoy this awful habit... sorry.

In the past couple months, Madison has tried to restrict smokers by not allowing smokers to smoke in the smokiest of places known... the bars. This came as a huge shock to me actually. For sundry reasons, I disagree with how this notion took affect almost immediately without considering alternatives. My largest issue it that defenders of the ban claim that the people in those areas are having their rights violated. They chose not to smoke and yet our band of malicious smokers is forcing cancer sticks down their throat as they try to dine, or drink, or even as they work. HOW DARE WE DO THAT!

Hear's some news for people that depend on that argument. Nobody made bar-owners allow smoking. And nobody made non-smokers enter the establishment. Bar-owners allow smoking b/c a large portion of their business are people that smoke. If non-smoking was so popular, why aren't there more smoke-free bars? B/c a much smaller portion of the business will come. So who's rights are being defiled here? It just irritates me to hear that statement as an actual defense.

All in all, it was aggravating to see that happen, but maybe some good will come of it. I do eventually want to stop my disgusting habit. It is expensive and unhealthy. I know what it does to my body and I do care about the people around me. Maybe this will help out. Sounds hypocritical, but I really do hate those "non-smokers are better" type of statements. Whose next? Drinkers? Atheists? Am I staring at another prohibition down the line?

Probably not in WI. Everyone drinks. That's why they needed to stop the smoking. It compromised their drinking. Nice rationale guys, how's that sclerosis of the liver coming along?

  1. it's not easy at all, bro. I love smoking, everything about it. maybe we can give mom a big guilt trip about it since I think we have a gestational predilection towards nictine addiction.

    or no will power

one or other. the only non smoker child is the youngest, and I think that's because his girlfriend would beat him up if he even though about it

    literally :)

I caved and had a clove cigarrette just for the flavor the day we closed on the house. It was my carrot.

in DE they have the no smoking in establishments, and yes, my argument is the same as yours. They had no-smoking restraunts, they could do the same to bars, however, the difference is this -- they (business owners/employees) may have wanted a no smoking establishment however known that they would have lost money. but a law isn't going to make as big of a difference.

overall I have to say that as time has progressed, I don't mind it so much, even as a smoker, I didn't mind that it encouraged me not to chain smoke. also it's encouraged more places in this area to have outdoor seating, which I enjoy --

up there on the glacier I can see where that wouldn't be as desirable.

be well, good luck and don't believe daryl, odds are he's caved since last time I spoke ot him he couldn't pinpoint exactly how long its been

it's like an alcoholic, you can figure out exactly how long you've been off the stuff.

    love

    sis
